Freedom to the Free Workshop
What does it mean to be free on Juneteenth and beyond? Writer, filmmaker, performer and historian Maya Washington will facilitate an intergenerational workshop inspired by the United States Commission on Civil Rights 1963 publication “Freedom to the Free: Century of Emancipation 1863-1963” that chronicles the first century of progress after the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. Community will be invited to consider what an updated version of this report might look like from the years 1963-2063. Participants will explore the significance of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution and craft their own vision of a “Freedom to the Free” report for the year 2063.
